"Happy Tamu Loshar" in Nepali is said as "शुभ तामु ल्होसार!" (Shubha Taamu Lhosaar!) or "तामु ल्होसारको शुभकामना!" (Taamu Lhosaarako shubhakaamanaa!).

You can also greet with "शुभ गुरुङ नयाँ वर्ष!" or wish prosperity with "नयाँ वर्षमा खुशी र समृद्धि होस्!" — "May joy and prosperity be with you in the New Year!"

Tamu Loshar is celebrated on Poush 15 of the Nepali calendar, corresponding to approximately December 30 each year. It marks the beginning of the Gurung New Year and coincides with the winter season after the harvest.

Large celebrations are held in Kathmandu, Lamjung, Kaski, Tanahun, and Gorkha — districts where the Gurung community is most concentrated — with cultural programs, feasts, and traditional performances.

Tamu Loshar is the most important festival of the Gurung (Tamu) people of Nepal, marking the beginning of their lunar New Year. It is a time to honor ancestors, maintain traditional practices, and celebrate the community's connection to the mountains and ancestral homeland.

In recent decades, Tamu Loshar has grown into a recognized national cultural event, celebrated with government support and large public programs in Kathmandu.

The most notable traditional dances of Tamu Loshar are the Ghatu dance — a sacred ritual performed by young women over multiple days, involving trance-like states tied to the worship of nature spirits — and the Chudka dance, a communal celebratory dance.

Both dances are accompanied by traditional Gurung music and are considered living expressions of Gurung spiritual and cultural heritage.

Tamu Loshar begins with community gatherings, traditional Gurung feasts, and cultural programs featuring Ghatu and Chudka dances, folk songs, and poetry. Elders pass down stories and traditions to younger generations.

In Kathmandu, large public events are organized by Gurung associations, with people in traditional attire honoring ancestors and praying for the New Year.
