Mangal Font Typing Test

Mangal is a Unicode Devanagari font developed by Microsoft and included with Windows. It supports the full Unicode Devanagari character set (U+0900–U+097F), which includes all characters needed for Nepali, Hindi, and other Devanagari-script languages.

Mangal is used for Unicode typing because text in Mangal is stored as standard Unicode — it can be read on any device and software without requiring the Mangal font to be installed, making it the modern standard for digital Devanagari text.

The Devanagari Inscript keyboard layout is a standardised keyboard layout for typing in Devanagari script, developed by the Government of India's Department of Electronics. It is the same layout used across Devanagari-based languages including Nepali, Hindi, and Sanskrit.

Key features of the Inscript layout:

1. Standardised key positions for all Devanagari characters
2. Efficient layout designed for fast touch typing
3. Ctrl+Alt combinations for Devanagari digits (१, २, ३...)
4. Works with Unicode encoding

Mangal Unicode Typing: Uses standard Unicode encoding with the Devanagari Inscript keyboard. Each key press inserts a specific Unicode Devanagari code point. Text is universally readable without the Mangal font installed.

Preeti Font Typing: Uses the Preeti Traditional keyboard layout. The keyboard mapping is based on the older Preeti typewriter convention. Text requires the Preeti font installed to display correctly.

Unicode (Mangal) is the modern standard and is gradually replacing font-based systems like Preeti in government offices.

In the Devanagari Inscript keyboard layout, Devanagari digits are typed using Ctrl + Alt + Number combinations:

Ctrl+Alt+1 = १   Ctrl+Alt+2 = २   Ctrl+Alt+3 = ३
Ctrl+Alt+4 = ४   Ctrl+Alt+5 = ५   Ctrl+Alt+6 = ६
Ctrl+Alt+7 = ७   Ctrl+Alt+8 = ८   Ctrl+Alt+9 = ९

On many keyboards, AltGr + number also works the same as Ctrl + Alt + number.

The Lok Sewa Aayog (Nepal Public Service Commission) typing speed requirements for Unicode typing vary by post and vacancy notice.

Generally, candidates need 25–35 words per minute (WPM). The exact requirement is specified in each vacancy notice. Always verify the official notice for your specific exam.

In Unicode Nepali typing, each word is composed of individual characters typed in sequence:

Example: योजना is typed as: य + ो + ज + न + ा

Key components to understand:

1. Consonants are typed as individual characters
2. Vowel signs (matras) are typed after the consonant they modify
3. Chandrabindu (ँ) and other combining marks are typed after the character they modify
4. Independent vowels (आ, ई, ऊ) are typed as single characters
