Nepali Modification of Some English Words

When English words enter Nepali everyday speech, they are often adapted to fit Nepali phonology and mouth-feel. Here are common English loanwords as they appear in Nenglish writing:

Special Way of Addressing People

One of the most distinctive features of Nepali communication—preserved faithfully in Nenglish—is the kinship-based system of address. Rather than using first names, Nepali speakers address people by their relational role, even when those people are strangers. This warmth carries over fully into Nenglish writing:

Nepaliness in Pronunciation

Nenglish carries distinctive phonological traits rooted in Nepali speech patterns. When reading Nenglish text aloud or listening to a native speaker, you will notice these consistent features:

• Aspirated consonants: Nepali distinguishes aspirated sounds — kha (ख), gha (घ), cha (छ), jha (झ), tha (थ), dha (ध), pha (फ), bha (भ). In Nenglish, the “h” after a consonant signals aspiration: "kha", "gha", "bha".
• Retroflex sounds: Nepali has retroflex consonants (ट, ड, ण) that have no exact English equivalent. In Nenglish, these are often written the same as dentals (t, d, n) but a fluent speaker knows to retroflex them.
• The “v” → “b” shift: The English v sound is frequently pronounced as b in Nepali. So English words like “video” and “vote” become bideo and bote in natural speech. In Nenglish writing you may see both forms.
• Vowel length: Nepali distinguishes short and long vowels (a / aa, i / ii, u / uu). Nenglish writers often double vowels to signal length: "raamro" (राम्रो), "dherai" (धेरै).
• Word-final nasal sounds: Words ending in nasal vowels (chha, hun, chhan) are a defining feature of Nepali. These appear regularly in Nenglish: "Thik chha", "Ma hun", "Tapain aaunubhayo chha".
• Tonal stress: Unlike Hindi, Nepali has a more level tonal pattern. This means Nenglish speech sounds more even and less staccato than Hinglish.

Influence of Hinglish

Nenglish does not exist in isolation. Nepal shares a long open border with India, and Hindi media—Bollywood films, Hindi music, and Indian television—has been a constant presence in Nepali cultural life for decades. This exposure has meant that Hinglish (Hindi written in English letters) has had a measurable influence on how Nepali speakers write in the Roman script.^[3]

• Shared vocabulary: Many Hindi loanwords are so deeply embedded in everyday Nepali speech that they appear naturally in Nenglish. Words like yaar (friend), bilkul (absolutely), theek hai / thik cha (OK), and bas (enough) are used identically in both Hinglish and Nenglish.
• Code-switching patterns: The practice of mixing a South Asian language with English mid-sentence, pioneered and popularised by Hinglish speakers in Indian media and urban culture, has been adopted naturally by Nepali bilinguals. The structural grammar of code-switching in Nenglish closely mirrors Hinglish patterns.
• Bollywood and media borrowing: Popular Bollywood phrases and slang cross over directly into Nenglish. A young Nepali might write "Bhai, ekdum mast cha" using Hindi-origin mast, alongside native Nepali bhai and cha.
• Cross-border communities: The Madhesh region of Nepal is home to large Maithili and Bhojpuri-speaking communities with strong cultural and linguistic ties to northern India. Their speech blends Nepali, Hindi, and English in ways that are particularly close to Hinglish.
